This academic year, we have launched an ambitious project of early integration of basic and clinical disciplines. The Double Helix Curriculum was developed by Edward Hundert in Rochester, USA. It has been implemented in Vermont as well as at Michigan and Harvard Medical Schools. Since September 2024, we have been offering this integrative course to those who are lucky to enter the IEU’s European Medical School in Kyiv!We believe that discussing clinical issues, practicing interaction with patients and using medical tools should be done from the very first days of training future doctors.
Students have already discussed values of doctors, talked about trust in the group, solved the AMBOSS task together with facilitator Vadym Vus and started working on ultrasound devices. When first-year students picked up the sensor, the first practical questions on anatomy and psychology appeared:
“Is it possible to see several organs simultaneously in one mode?”
“Why can’t you tell the patient, ‘Be patient, I will push...’”
The guidance week is over, and basic knowledge of physics, anatomy, psychology and English is immediately integrated with future challenges of modern doctors. The European Medical School makes it possible because we see the goal of education not just as knowledge and skills but also as students’ creativity in a safe environment. Besides, respect and tolerance, cooperation between Departments and contemporary approaches of our lecturers are the key to success.

We received the ultrasound device from Andrew Liteplo, an American of Ukrainian descent, Professor at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Clinical Ultrasound Research and Education(CURE) at Mass General Hospital in Boston.
