On 5–6 June 2025, the International European University (IEU) hosted the large-scale international summit Medical Bridge Connect: Ukraine–Malta — Contemporary Challenges, Joint Solutions in Kyiv and Malta. The event brought together leading specialists and representatives of the academic and clinical communities from Ukraine, Malta, Poland, and Romania to discuss current challenges in healthcare and medical education.
The summit marked a meaningful step towards the internationalisation of medical education and the renewal of academic programmes in line with global standards. Strategic panel discussions focused on adapting curricula to contemporary healthcare needs, including the introduction of integrated learning, active teaching methods, and patient-centred training. Participants outlined approaches to developing students’ clinical competence, research literacy, and ethical responsibility.
The programme also encompassed clinical content. Expert presentations addressed the use of artificial intelligence in medicine, early initiation of biologic therapy for inflammatory bowel disease, self-management tools for people with diabetes, and responses to the rising burden of cancer in Ukraine. A dermatroscopy section featured a hands-on masterclass in diagnosing skin neoplasms, including basal-cell carcinoma. Among the speakers were Oleksii Kolesnik, MD, PhD; dermatologist-oncologist Denys Sylenko; and Chief Physician of the “Svitlana Dyachuk” clinic, Svitlana Dyachuk.
A dedicated session examined IEU’s educational strategy and the modernisation of the Medicine programme. University representatives outlined steps to implement updated programme learning outcomes, encompassing comprehensive clinical preparation, research skills, contemporary ethical standards, and alignment with recognised international approaches to professional training. This work enhances the global competitiveness of IEU graduates and enables employers across Europe to assess their preparation as commensurate with that of graduates from accredited European medical schools.
IEU extends its gratitude to all participants, moderators, and partners for their expertise and collaborative contribution to advancing modern medical education.
